Spud (Troye Sivan) with The Guv (John Cleese)
I was lucky enough to attend the first “Spud” premiere at Monte Casino in Johannesburg Saturday night. Wow guys, oh my word, WOW!!! Now, I personally am very fussy when it comes down to being impressed – I expect a lot out of events, movies etc. and am most often disappointed when things don’t pan out as they should. Well, like I said earlier – WOW!!! I was totally blown away by the “Spud” premiere!! It didn’t meet my expectations – it totally surpassed my expectations and then exceeded them even more!! Seriously!!

We arrived at the Premiere and were promptly handed paper ties to wear. Absolutely everyone was wearing their “school tie” – it looked awesome!! They deco was also amazing!!! From chalkboards with rules written on them to a tuck shop (with real sweets) to dictionaries and crayons on the tables. Even the waiters (yes, there was also real food) were dressed up as Michaelhouse students with prefect badges. Everyone looked the part. There was no doubt that we were entering the realms of high school again (Michaelhouse, nonetheless) - a real walk down memory lane
After mingling around, taking pics at the photo booths, getting hyper on cold drinks and sweets, we gathered around the centre stage where we were introduced to Ross Garland (producer); Donovan Marsh (director); John van de Ruit (author); Troye Sivan (Spud); John Cleese (The Guv) and The Crazy 8 with Mermaid and Amanda.
I expect John Cleese to adopt Troye Sivan when he comes back to SA to film the the second movie – hehe
We then huddled off to the 3 allocated cinemas where we were greeted with a choice of cold drinks at the door and popcorn on our seats. No queues – how awesome it that?
And the movie began…

Ok, I really don’t want to give too much away here – even though most of you have read the book and know the story line pretty well – I don’t want to spoil it for those few who haven’t read the book…yet
What I can say is that most book to screen adaptions are, well – ugh! Yes, that’s the word for them – ugh… I personally only know a handful of book to screen adaptions that have been satisfactory (not gonna mention any names here – think vampires and wolves as well as a certain school of wizardry). As far as “Spud” is concerned – superb, first-rate adaption!! It takes a lot of hard work to redraft a 380 page novel to a 120 page screenplay. And man, have they pulled it off!! If you enjoyed the book you will absolutely loooove the movie!! And if you haven’t read the book yet, well you gonna loooove the movie too
Get ready to laugh and cry (literally) during the film… Awe-inspiring performances by the two stars – John Cleese and Troye Sivan. John Cleese, as you all know, is astounding! Whilst Troye Sivan – remember that name – this little man is going to go far!! The rest of the cast (Crazy 8, girls, family at home, teachers, students and everyone else) wow – you guys were exquisite!
Unfortunately, after the screening, John Cleese made a dash for the door. But not to worry – we then got to mingle with the rest of the cast whilst enjoying some more snacks and cappuccino. Troye and the Crazy 8, girls, students, family – what an amazing and crazy bunch
You all rock!! I was then also fortunate enough to have my “Spud” novel (movie tie-in edition) autographed by the cast and of course John van de Ruit – schweeeeet

My autographed copy of "Spud". SCHWEET
Thanx so much to MTN and Nu Metro for hosting the event – you guys are AYOBA!! Thanx also to absolutely everyone involved with the making of the film – this is definitely a South African production you guys can be most proud of!! You guys have set a new standard by which all other South African films will be judged…
Now go out, tell your friends, spread the word, 3 December is the day!! I’m definitely heading back to the cinema to watch “Spud” again on the 3rd – hope to see you all there

The Crazy Eight
Face-Box just posted there photo booth pics up from the evening. Here are some random and funky ones of the cast

Awesome article; love the pics and my heart is bursting with pride and happiness for Troye. I totally agree that …. ‘this little man is going to go far!!’…. I am in awe of his presence in what ever does. Thanks so much for the excellent review!!
Thanx Debbie. I wish you could’ve been there
Shame, Troye’s mom was standing next to me during his speech – she was crying the whole way through. I’m sure she’s VERY proud
Awesome Article man, I can’t wait for this movie to come out in SA and thanks to this article I am now even more amped about it.
This is the only book series I have read that I actually enjoyed, I am not a book fan and hardly ever read but for some reason spud just caught my attention from the first page. Do you know what is happening with the movie on a international front? Is it going to be released in the UK and US? Will be a real shame if it’s not I am afraid (From the sounds of things)
I also hope this gets The Evens back to South Africa, it’s a real shame when pure talent leaves South Africa. He still would have been a star since he was founded on youtube.
Thanks for the review Charles, you lucky agent!
Thanx man – really enjoyed it – even I’m amped to go watch it again – hehe

You right, the books are amazing!! I know quite a few “non-readers” that have read them and loved them…
The Evens? I’m assuming you referring to Troye’s family? Yip, sad to see talent like that leave, but having family in Australia myself I totally understand why people move over. If they happy there then that’s what counts – charity starts at home hey
Hope to see you at the movies on the 3rd man
Wonderful Review!!! We will be at the Cape Town Premiere Wednesday 17th. Cannot wait to see the movie.
Thanx Audrey
Mc Gregor hey? You not by any change related to Alex? You guys are gonna have total blast at the Cape Town premiere tonight!! Have lots and lots of fun
Enjoy the movie too – it rocks!!
Proud Mom!!! Cape Town premiere rocked. The movie is absolutely hilarious!! I did not know that my beautiful daughter Alex could look so scary. Her kisses are memorable. Everyone must go and see the movie.
Awesome!! Sure you must be proud
The Jo’burg premiere was MASSIVE!! I hear the Cape Town one was a lot more “personal” – glad you guys had fun
Haha – she did look quite scary in the movie hey
I totally agree – EVERYONE must go watch the movie, sommer twice
I have super pictures of Cape Town Premiere on “Spud the official movie fan page – Christine”. Have you seen the book – The Making of Spud The Movie? Excellent read!!!
On the facebook page? Just checked some out there – awesome!!!
It’s hilarious so far!!! Great to see what actually went into the making of the movie
Yip, bought the book 2 nights ago – about half way – don’t want to finish it too quickly
Similar to Edwin Watson (comment above), I am not an avid reader. However the Spud series captured my interest like no other and I found myself thoroughly depressed after finishing it…and had to read it again. It had me in tears (from laughing so hard) and I loved each and every character as they are realistic and unique. John van de Ruit is a genius, a rare South African jewel that we should be proud to associate ourselves with. I find it highly ironic that the social issues of a schoolboy in 1990 can still be applicable to teenagers around the world today. I have watched the movie (day it was released), and declare it a triumph! I have no idea if it’s going global but for the world’s sake, I certainly hope so. The characters were perfectly chosen and portrayed their parts with nothing but skill, John Cleese is a legend among actors. I am a HUGE Spud fan and have a feeling that that won’t change anytime soon…
Glad to hear that you liked the book and the movie Kelsey
I have a few friends that aren’t big into reading and they have all loved Spud too
