Those of you that have read “Sarah’s Key” by Tatiana de Rosnay will be quite happy to hear that the trailer for the movie has been finalised
If you haven’t read the book yet (shame on you), here is a quick description taken from Amazon:
Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally arrested with her family by the French police in the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, but not before she locks her younger brother in a cupboard in the family’s apartment, thinking that she will be back within a few hours.
Paris, May 2002: On Vel’ d’Hiv’s 60th anniversary, journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France’s past. Through her contemporary investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself compelled to retrace the girl’s ordeal, from that terrible term in the Vel d’Hiv’, to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah’s past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life.
Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode.
Even though the book is available in English (not too sure if Tatiana originally wrote it in English or if it was translated unlike her previous novels that were written in French, this is the first novel she has written in English – thanx for the info Kristin) the movie is still in French. The movie’s official title is “Elle s’appelait Sarah” which directly translated means – Her Name Was Sarah. Yes, the two names differ quite a lot but at least they are both apt names
Now just hoping the movie has English subtitles (sure it will though). The film is premiering in France on 13 October 2010.
I have update the video below with one that contains English subtitles
Here is a different trailer
Bonus: some photos from the movie can be found here orĀ here
Just to clarify–yes, de Rosnay did write the book Sarah’s Key in English. Found out on her website.
Thanx for the info Kristin – will edit the post
Does anyone know when the movie Elle S’Appelait Sarah based off the novel Sarah’s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay will release in the US?
Not sure when the US release will be (probably only in 2011 sometime) – will try find out from the author…
Nonetheless, you can pre-order the Blu-ray or DVD from Amazon.fr at one of the following links:
Blu-ray – http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0046ZT66Y
DVD – http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0046ZTF7E
Thank you for the info = )
No problem
I was checking out amazon.fr & in the product detail it states that this movie probably won’t be seen outside of Europe & the dvd format is region 2(Japan,Middle East,South Africa) ,So does this mean it probably will not have english subtitles either?I was have a little trouble with the google translator.
Hi Ruthie,
Just checked out the site with Google translator again – where it mentions that it’s a Region 2 DVD it actually says “This DVD will probably NOT be viewable outside Europe” – doesn’t mean it won’t release outside Europe, just means that the region 2 disk “probably” won’t work on a DVD player outside Europe. Best bet is to check and see if your DVD player is region-free (test DVDs from other regions)… There are always ways around this on a computer too…
I see that for the Blu-ray disk they also mention it’s region 2. Blu-ray disks fall in either region A, B or C. This disk is probably a region B (whereas the States is region A).
Fortunately for me both the disks will work here in South Africa
In my opinion, your best bet would be to get the DVD and then hope it works on your DVD player otherwise copy it region free on your computer
P.S. No idea if it will have English subtitles – better find out first before ordering otherwise it would be a deal breaker…
Just had word back from the author – I quote: “half the movie is already in English !
but pretty sure they will.”
So hoping for those subtitles. Guess I’m gonna pre-order my copy already
Wow !Thank you for the all the helpful info. I will definitely check into that & see if my dvd player will allow region 2 dvd’s to play .This is also something I will keep in mind when purchasing dvd players in the future,so thank you.It also sound pretty hopeful that this movie may have english subtitles or at least the option to choose english subtitles afterall = ) I’m currently reading the book & look forward to seeing the movie as well.
Glad you enjoying the book – I read it a little while back and absolutely LOVED it
Can’t wait to see the movie either
