Guys, I was fortunate enough to go to the “Spud” movie premiere in Johannesburg. Review can be found here.
Those of you who have read the hilarious Spud by John van de Ruit have probably heard about the upcoming movie. Well, filming starts on the 8th of March and will run until about the 17th of April. The bulk of the filming is to take place at Michaelhouse with a week of shooting in Durban North (for the Milton family home scenes). You can expect the movie to be released at cinemas here in South Africa around Christmas time on the 26th of Novemeber on the 3rd of December.

“District 9″ has definitely set a new standard for SA movies! Hoping “Spud” can meet that standard too

In most cases (ok, all cases) the books are better than the movies – that’s a given. All comes down to how well the book to movie adaption was and as far as “Spud” goes – I think it’s a pretty good adaption

Tanit Phoenix is so talented… she is in 4 movies this year, @ South African, @ american, and its only April! amazing talent!
Tanit is definitely very talented!! I look forward to seeing her in many more films to come

Not that Spud finds any of the boys attractive, but he does mention that Rambo is good-looking and that Pike is ugly as sin…

Haha Darren Frances (Pike) is on exchange or something at my school and we just finished the school play, he wasn’t in it but was a dead body in one scene and I got a hug from him after our last show

If all goes to plan then the movie should release on 26 November here in SA.
This movie is only based on the first book. It all depends on how well the movie does before a decision is made to make the next movie or not… Hope that answers your questions

I’m so excited for the new spud movie. But theres just 1 thing that annoys me is that they cast travis hornsby as the role of Boggo. No offence to him at all but there was a guy in our school who got the final 3, he is a brilliant actor. But otherwise think the cast is amazing ( Charlbi Dean Kreak and Alex Mcgregor are hot as hell).
Well I’m very sorry for your friend…. but I’ve seen Travis Hornsby in action and trust me, he is an AMAZING Actor!!!!! Maybe one day they will act together

Why does spud have blue eyes??? cuz in the book it says he has green eyes!!!!! and why is christine a brunette???? She is supposed to be blonde (thats what the the book says!!!)
True true true and true. But when a book is transcribed into a movie there are usually a few changes. Basically, if a fact (like the eye colour for example) is not directly linked to the plot, then they often change

Christine definately isn’t blonde. John himself has said that he wrote Christine, thinking of her as a brunette. As for eye colour, anything that is completely irrelevant will be cut out… And maybe they even asked him to wear green contacts for the movie.
If I had to choose between second-best actor or best actor with different eye colour, I’d go with best actor… Spud himself gets the role of Oliver despite not looking the perfect part…
It boils down to what’s important… Troye’s eye colour or his talent? Which would you hire on?
Wow thats actually depressing. I just visited the spudthemovie.com website and so far i’ve spotted 2 fairly big mistakes and one complete f-up. The 2 fairly big mistakes were BOTH on geckos profile on “the cast”. It quotes exactly as follows, ” but only after Spud takes him to the San after breaking his arm in a monumental pile-on, do the two start to bond.” Spud didnt break his arm, Mad Dog did (and it wasnt a “pile-on”, it was a crash tackle), and also Spud didnt bond with Gecko after “Mad Dog” broke his arm, they only start to bond after Spud gets bronchitis. And the HUGE f-up is they flippin didnt even get fatty’s real name right. On the sight they call him “Sidney SIBEKO-Scott”! He’s real name is Sidney SMITHERSON-Scott. Its actually quite sad that the best movie about to be released website hasnt even read the book yet.
Josh – I worked on the Spud Movie and was personally on set. I dont know if you realized, but when a movie is filmed, details are changed in prearranged confidential meetings between author and script writer. The fact that Fatty’s name is wrong…is to accomodate the fact that he is black, and Geckos arm is broken in a pile on…in the movie. As the website refers to the production of ‘Spud the Movie’ it is in no way legally bound by the book or author and is therefore allowed to make changes to character and plot. So please dont refer to a website, designed by people who have been directly involved with the entire production of the movie, and all of its crew and cast, of making ‘one complete f-up.’

I got the spud book, two years ago for my birthday and I fell inlove with it:). I can relate to spud, I’m a boarder and I’m on scholarship, in a private school for girls. I would really love to congratulate each and everyone in the cast and as well as the people who worked so hard to make the story come to life. I have no doubt that this movie is going to be brilliant. I read all three books and they really amazing. Well done to John van der Ruit for his amazing book, without him there wouldn’t be a movie, so well done to him:)
AWW YEAH!!!!! Spud really is an amazing book. They should really play this movie in America. I live in the U.S. and long desperately to see this movie. The cast is absolutely amazing and are extremely perfect for their parts. Hope the movie was as spectacular as the book was.

I have seen Travis Hornsby on stage since he was in grade 3. He is an absolutely amamzing actor. His poem recitals are even better!!!!

Second movie, well, let’s just say “watch this space”;) There are talks of a second movie but nothing has been confirmed yet… Cna’t wait for the 4th book either!!! It’s due in August 2012
